My name is Sam from Samcraft, and today we’re diving deep into the magical artistry behind slate engraving with a big reveal about how you can turn things up a notch with your diode laser machine. Brace yourself – we’re about to get right down to the nitty-gritty of it all.

Meet the Mighty Dual Laser Machine – xTool F1

I recently got my hands on a brand-new xTool F1 Dual Laser Machine. What’s so special about it? It has a pair of lasers – a 455 blue light diode laser and a 1064 nanometer infrared laser. This machine packs a punch with a ten-watt diode, capable of slicing through wood, leather, and other materials while also etching almost any material you can imagine. Today’s star of the show, though, is slate.

“Remember, regardless of the machine you own, the tips I am going to share apply to all diode and infrared lasers. So, stick around!”

Keys to Colorful Slate Engravings: Engraving Tests

Before getting creative, you’ll need to undertake a series of engraving tests. Why these tests, you ask? They allow us to understand what speed and power range our machine needs to generate different color effects. The secret sauce to colorful engravings lies in tweaking speed and power settings.

On my xTool F1, I ran four different engraving tests with both blue light and infrared lasers, using power levels and speed ranges from 10 to 200 and 100 to 400 respectively. The purpose of these tests was to explore the full gamut of color outcomes.

And remember, even if you own a different type of laser machine, this methodology is entirely applicable.

Assigning Settings for Colorful Outcomes

Next, let’s jump over to our software, pull up our desired design, and start assigning settings to our respective layers.

Setting Up With xTool Creative Space

I launched xTool Creative Space and connected it to the xTool F1— but feel free to use any compatible software like Lightburn. With my design imported and centered on the machine’s plate, I measured my engraving object (a slate drink coaster) and scaled the design to fit using digital calipers.

Then, I separated my image into different layers, each corresponding to the colors I wished to see in my final result. Here, creativity has the steering wheel. In my case, I chose a custom setting for each layer reflecting different color outcomes from my earlier tests.

Implementing colorization results was a breeze! With my setting saved, I simply selected my custom setting from a drop-down menu for each layer. For instance, my red layer, layer number two, was set to ‘Engrave’ and ‘Slate Gold Blue’ to give the darkest outcome. I followed this process for each layer until my entire design was colorized.

Lastly, I clicked on the ‘Start’ button on xTool Creative Space, which created the G code and files, sending them over to the machine for processing.

Running the Colorful Engraving

With the files and settings in place, it was time to move towards the machine. First, I cleaned off the slate surface with isopropyl alcohol, placed it into the laser machine, and focused the laser head on my material’s surface by aligning the red and blue dots.

After achieving the correct focus, I framed the engraving outline and position it as desired on the xTool Creative Space. When satisfied, I clicked ‘Stop Framing,’ then ‘Start,’ which transferred the information to the laser machine.

Safety first, folks! Always remember to lower the safety shield before pressing the button on the side of the machine to initiate the engraving job.”

The Final Result: From Bland to Grand

After about 8 minutes, voila! I had a colorized slate coaster with an intricate design. By adjusting the speed and power settings and layering our design, we had taken a simple slate coaster and turned it into a rainbow of detail.

You might think to create such detailed and vivid engravings requires a hefty investment, but trust me, this is not the case. A diode laser machine and some good old ingenuity will have you producing your own beautiful designs in no time.

If you own an xTool machine and want to recreate this project, I’ve uploaded the design file for free on my website. Grab it and give your creativity a whirl!

Wrapping It Up

By running a series of engraving tests while adjusting the speed and power settings on your diode laser machine, you too can create intricate and colorful engravings on slate – or any material that you fancy.

There’s always more to learn, and more projects on the horizon, so be sure to check back for more content and new inspiration. As always, your questions and comments are always welcome. Happy crafting everyone, and I’ll see you next time in the workshop!

However, the last thing you feel like doing after sinking your hard-earned money into buying a CNC is to spend even more money on an expensive or complex table. I’m here to show you how I built my own cnc table for only $100!

Why Do I Need a CNC Table?

man asking why

Most CNC machines on the market today, especially those marketed to Hobbyists or Woodworkers, do not come with legs or a base to stand on their own. So unless you’re planning to put your new expensive machine on the floor, you will need to get yourself a table!

Machines like the Shapeoko Pro, Inventables X-Carve, and Onefinity rely upon you providing the surface to mount them in your workshop or maker space. Given the large sizes of these machines, you may find yourself needing to buy or build a table large enough to fit your CNC!

How Do I Build a CNC Table?

Building a table for your CNC machine can be as complex or easy as you wish to make it. Some use construction lumber frames with basic plywood tops. Others build elaborate enclosures from extruded aluminum. Are you looking for a table that is easy to build, attractive, stable, strong, and affordable? These were qualities I had in mind while designing my own CNC table using only two sheets of 4′ x 8′ plywood!

how do i

Before you begin building, think about your workshop, the CNC machine itself, and any special needs you may have. Ask yourself the following questions.

  • What is the footprint size of your CNC?
  • Do you need room for accessories?
  • Where will your CNC’s computer live?
  • Are there any features you want your table to incorporate such as lumber storage or expansion panels for electrical or safety switches?
  • Do you need your table to be mobile and on wheels?
  • Do you need your table to fold up when not in use?

These are just a few of the many questions you should be asking to get a better understanding of exactly what you need. Knowing your needs will help guide you in building a table that serves you best in your own unique workshop or maker space.

My Shapeoko Pro CNC Table

I purchased a Shapeoko Pro CNC from Carbide 3D and needed a table for it. I wanted a rock-solid foundation for my machine to sit on. My table had to be dead flat, stable, and not sag over time from the weight of the machine (175 lbs. in my case).

CNC Router Table Plans Samcraft

The Shapeoko Pro is one of the larger Woodworking / Hobbyist CNC Routers on the market today. This meant I was going to be in for a larger table than others have made. I decided to make my table 60″ wide and 48″ deep to accommodate the Shapeoko Pro. This would give me about 6″ clearance on all sides from the machine to the table edge.

I wanted a table that was mobile, so put it on top of a set of six heavy-duty locking caster wheels. The large casters allow the table to glide smoothly across my workshop floor when needed, while their locking feature keep the table parked securely when it’s time to work.

I have a small workshop (16′ x 16′) and making room for this CNC table was a big task! To maximize the space and uses, I incorporated material storage into the table and also gave room for my shop vac dust collection to live under the table top, too.

I plan to add an emergency stop switch to my CNC table in the near future as well as other switches to control dust collection, lighting, the router, and more. Knowing this ahead of time, I was able to design my CNC table with a special removable panel that I can mount all the electrical hardware onto for a nice clean look.

The last need for my CNC table was for it to be affordable! I was able to come up with an efficient design that used only two sheets of plywood for the whole build! This made the cost of the project at $100 USD — a great deal!

Where Can I Buy a CNC Table?

Not looking to go the DIY route on your table? Is your free time limited and you’d rather buy a table? Here are some considerations to think about when picking a commercial option for your CNC.

  • How large is your machine?
  • How heavy is your machine?
  • What is your budget?
  • Will you be adding an enclosure to it?

A recent poll of a CNC Woodworking group I am a member of showed these as the top tables people buy for their CNC Router machines.

Built on the same battery platform of their other cordless tools, this 18 gauge brad nail gun integrates seamlessly into your cordless tool lineup and further enhances your ability to get projects done!

Are Cordless Nail Guns Any Good?

Cordless Nail Guns - Good or Bad

Designed to eliminate the need for compressors, hoses, or costly gas cartridges, modern day cordless nail guns are just as powerful as their pneumatic( air-powered) competitors. Today’s cordless nail guns combine electric motor technology with the latest in battery advances to bring a nail gun that is just as powerful and infinitely more portable!

Who are Cordless Nail Guns Made For?

Battery powered cordless nail guns are made for both the professional and DIYer / Weekend Warrior. They are tough enough to handle the job site yet so easy to use that anyone will feel comfortable an in complete control using one in their own home. The quiet, lightweight design of cordless nail guns makes them easy to use and not as intimidating as having to use air compressors, hoses, oiling tools, and the loud air nailers of traditional design.

What is a Cordless Tool Ecosystem?

Are you wondering what exactly the term ‘tool ecosystem’ means? It’s most commonly used to mean using the same tool brand and/or battery system. To make the tool brands all the same.

In the world of cordless power tools, having the same tool ecosystem, or battery ecosystem, means being able to increase your versatility and usability of your tools! Keeping the same battery type across the board means one battery will run several types of tools and you won’t have to purchase separate chargers, batteries, and other things that end up being a waste.

Staying in my own personal tool ecosystem was why I decided to buy the Craftsman V20 Brad Nailer for my own use in my small workshop. I bought the Craftsman V20 8-Tool Combo Kit in 2019 and have loved using them ever since. Now that I have the cordless brad nail gun, I have even more batteries to share, an extra charger to use, and another tool to add to my cordless arsenal!

What about CNC machine? Have you seen others in the woodworking realm using them and wondered exactly what a CNC router is? Well then, our search is over! This article is going to quickly get you up to speed on the concept, terminology, and applications of the newest trend in the hobby realm, the CNC router!

What Does CNC Stand For?

The letters CNC are an acronym for the term Computer Numerical Control. In short, this means the automated control of a device by a computer. The device or tool being controlled by the computer can be a variety of things such as drills, routers, cutters, 3D printers, and even simple objects such as pens for artwork!

CNC - Computer Numerical Control

How Do CNC Machines Work?

CNC machines work by receiving instructions from a computer, via controller software, for specific actions to take and then performing them. These actions are usually directional movements along mathematical axes X (left & right), Y (forward & back), Z (up & down). There are other axes of control with special CNC machines, but these are rarely used in the woodworking world.

What is a CNC Router?

A CNC Router is commonly a three-axis (X, Y, Z) CNC machine coupled with a wood trim router or spindle motor with a cutting bit inserted to remove material. For woodworking, a CNC router is used to cut or carve away wood from a piece of stock to reveal the final project. This form of manufacturing is known as subtractive machining because material is taken away to produce the item.

  • 6.5″ length of 2″ PVC pipe – this size will vary depending on the width of your phone. Cut this pipe to 3″ longer than the width of your device.
  • (2) 2″ length of 2″ PVC pipe – this will connect the elbows to the bushings

Assembly Steps

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644244Cut the PVC pipe into the three lengths using a saw. For my phone (iPhone 8 Plus) my cut length was 6.5 inches. Your length may vary based upon the device you are using. Also cut two 2 inch long sections of pipe.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644270Using your tape measure and pencil, find the center point of the pipe. Using your device, mark the width and length of the cutout. You want as tight of a fit as possible while still leaving some wiggle room.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644311Using your drill and bits, drill small holes on the ends of the slot to cut out. TIP: It’s easier to start with a small bit and work you way up to the large bit rather than trying to drill the large hole at once. For my phone, I ended up drilling a 1/2 inch hole at each end of the slot.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644333With the holes drilled, the next step is to cut out the remaining waste portion of the pipe to finish the slot. You can cut this with a hand saw, or power saw — whatever you feel comfortable using! I used my Craftsman Oscillating Cutoff Tool and it made quick work of the job.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582646052With the slot cut, you will now want to round over and smooth any rough edges or imperfections. You can use a file set, sandpaper, or even a pair of scissors to scrap the edges smooth. This is the benefit of working with PVC!

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644367Assembly is a very easy process. Begin with your center pipe, and attach the two 90-degree elbow fittings to each end. Optional: use your PVC glue to affix the pieces permanently to the pipe.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644371The next step is to attach (or glue) the short 2 inch sections of pipe to the other ends of the 90 degree eblow fittings. Again, you can choose whether to glue them in place or use a friction fit.

PVC Phone Amplifier1582644389Your final step is to put the bushing adapters/reducers onto the ends of the small 2″ pipes to join the bushings to the elbows. These larger bushings tilt the unit backwards slightly to help project the sound upward and into the room. They also give the acoustic amplifier a nice look!

I was recently in the market to replace my old worn out Bosch 18v Cordless tool set. Are Craftsman Tools Still Lifetime Warranty?

Historically, Craftsman was known for their lifetime warranty on their tools. As their product line has diversified over the years, so has their warranties and coverage terms. For the Cordless (V20) Hand Held Power Tool series Craftsman’s warranty is a 3 Year Limited Warranty.

3 Year Limited Warranty

In addition to the 3 year limited warranty, they offer a 90 Day Satisfaction Guarantee that you’ll be happy with your tool or you can return it. As always, proof of purchase is required for any warranty honor so be sure to hang onto your receipts! For more information visit the Craftsman website here or call their Warranty Support at 1-888-331-4569 (in the US).

How to Craftsman Prices Compare to DeWalt?

Anytime you talk about tools, DeWalt is bound to come up in conversations. It seems to be people’s gold (or yellow) standard for comparing other tools brands to. This also seems to be a common theme whether or not the person has ever owned a DeWalt tool or if they have any direct experience with the opposing brand’s tools. I don’t want to disappoint you, so let’s compare prices between Craftsman and DeWalt tools. These prices are as of December, 2019 and are from Amazon.com additionally, I am putting the List Pricing so any sale prices are not factored in.

What is the Best Cordless Tool Kit Deal?

Answering the question of what is the best cordless tool kit deal is very subjective. Each person has their own requirements, constraints, and priorities. Here are questions to ask yourself to help narrow down your options. These are all questions I asked myself.

  • What is your budget?
  • How much can I afford to spend?
  • What are my needs?
  • How often do I plan to use these tools?
  • Do I have existing cordless tools that use the same battery?
  • How confident do I feel in the tool manufacture to produce a quality product?
  • Tools are investments, does the company have your back if something goes wrong?
  • What are my top tools that I need to get from a kit? This will give you an idea of the minimum tools you’ll want in a kit.
  • What are the tools I never plan to use? This can help you narrow down kits that may include tools you do not care to own.

In the end, no one can (or should) tell you what tool to get. It’s a decision you have to make for yourself and your individual needs. I hope this article was helpful and informative for you! If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them for me below. Thanks!

How to Install an Electrical Outlet https://sam-craft.com/how-to-install-an-electrical-outlet/ https://sam-craft.com/how-to-install-an-electrical-outlet/#respond Thu, 12 Sep 2019 15:32:29 +0000 https://thegreenacreworkshop.com/?p=700 Installing an electrical outlet is easy, straightforward, and within the skill set of any DIYer or Weekend Warrior. This article will guide you through the tools, safety equipment, and technique for adding or installing and old work electrical outlet into a wall, workshop, or garage.

Disclaimer:  I am not a licensed professional electrician and this article has not been approved by any licensed professional. Do not attempt anything you are uncomfortable with and always seek professional advice and help when performing such tasks. Attempt this at your own risk and liability.

Tool List

Material List

Safety First

Using your Electrical Tester, ensure power is disconnected to the circuit you will be tapping into. If you are unsure, just turn off your main breaker. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

How to Install an Outlet - Safety First

Mark and Cut

Mark out the location for your old work electrical box to be installed. I made a simple old work box template from cardboard since I do a lot of these installs. I would recommend spending the time and making one of your own if you are a DIYer, too.

With the lines marked, use your Plunge Cut Japanese Hand Saw to carefully cut the wall opening. Be very careful and mindful of where the wires are in the wall –Your saw will easily cut wires!

How to Install an Outlet - Cut Hole

Install the Old Work Electrical Box

Now it’s time to put the old work electrical outlet box into the wall. Punch out one of the tabs in the back of the outlet box, then carefully pull the wires through the hole as you work the box into the wall.

Once the box is in the wall, use your screwdriver to tighten the screws on the box. Old work outlet boxes have tabs that twist up and clamp onto your wall to secure themselves. Be careful not to over tighten these clamps as they will strip out or break!

How to Install an Outlet - Install Box

Prepare the Wires

With the outlet box in place, it’s time to strip off the protective sheathing of the wires and prepare them to be installed onto the outlet.

Using your wire strippers, carefully cut off the outermost wire sheathing to expose the wires. Then strip each individual wire sheathing off to expose about 1 inch of bare copper wire.

How to Install an Outlet - Strip Wires

Connect the Wires

On outlets in the US you will find three different screw colors. The screw colors correspond to the three wires as follows.

Silver Screw = Neutral / White Wire
Gold Screw = Hot / Black Wire
Green Screw = Ground / Bare Copper Wire

Using your Wire Strippers, bend the ends of the wires to make small hooks. Attach the wires around the screws in a clockwise fashion. This is important so that as you tighten the screws they pull the wires tight and secure them better. Using your Screwdriver, tighten the screws down snugly, including any extra screws you may not use in the outlet.

How to Install an Outlet - Screw Wire Color Code

Install the Outlet into the Box

With everything properly connected, secured, and double-checked that the wires are on the correct terminals, now is the time to work the outlet into the box. Be mindful of the wire locations and try to keep them from rubbing the outlet or terminals. You don’t want the wires shorting out in the box and causing an electrical fire!

When you get close to having the outlet in the box, you can use the screws on the outlet to pull it into the box the rest of the way. Alternate from top to bottom screws to “walk” the outlet into the box carefully. Also, be mindful of the vertical orientation (plumb) of the outlet as you tighten the screws. There are slots in the outlet to allow for compensation of crooked outlet boxes.

How to Install an Outlet - Outlet Installed

Attach the Outlet Cover

With the outlet in place, now is the time to put the cover on and hope and pray that it covers up any oopsies you had from cutting the hole in your wall.

Use your Screwdriver to install the screw, being careful not to over tighten it — it will crack the outlet cover if you are not careful! Unfortunately, I know this first hand.

How to Install an Outlet - Cover Plate Installed

Turn on the Power

With everything installed, turn the power back on, test the outlet with your Electrical Tester, and make sure everything works as expected.

High Fives?

Did everything work as expected? Did you not die? Did your wall not explode into flames? Does it look like a professional install? Did you not loose any fingers or appendages? Great! Give yourself a high five!

Make a Pallet Wood Spatula Cooking Utensil https://sam-craft.com/pallet-wood-spatula/ https://sam-craft.com/pallet-wood-spatula/#respond Sun, 14 Apr 2019 19:12:15 +0000 https://thegreenacreworkshop.com/?p=465 Welcome back to the workshop! Today I made a pallet wood spatula cooking utensil! Pallet wood projects are very popular and I completely understand why. Pallets are usually free, and readily available to anyone around the world. Add to that, their rustic qualities and you have a recipe for creativity without breaking anyone’s budget!

Today I bring you a really cool project — a pallet wood spatula made from free pallet wood, using a few tools in my workshop.

I started by cutting a piece of the 2×4 pallet runner to length at about 14 inches long. This would give about a 13 inch long cooking utensil once the ends were trimmed off.

Over on my Nova Comet II Lathe, I mounted the board and began turning it to shape using my 7/8″ Roughing Gouge — the only lathe tool used for this project. I formed the handle and the transition to the flat part of the pallet wood spatula, then sanded it to 320 grit all while on the wood lathe before taking the utensil off and moving on to the band saw.

I have an old Craftsman 10″ Band Saw that is no longer made, but very similar to a WEN 3962 Band Saw. It’s served me well for over 6 years. I took the utensil and trimmed one edge of the head (the flat part of the spatula) to get a flat face to then turn the utensil on its side and slice out the waste and form the thin curve of the spatula head. This is always a little tricky to ride that fine line between taking off enough material and not taking off too much!

After roughing the spatula head, I took it over to my bench top belt sander, again an old one, but similar to this Shop Fox W1855 with a cast iron base, and smoothed out the spatula head and edges to my liking. The belt sander is extremely useful for making quick work of the shaping of the spatula.

After sanding, it was a matter of working my way up through the grits by hand to 320 grit to get a nice smooth utensil. I finished the utensil with a good soaking of Walrus Oil – a food safe finish, and it was done.

This was a fun project and one that was relatively easy to make in an hour in my small workshop. Hope you enjoyed it!
